Controllino was developed with the highest industry safety and electronics standards in mind, and then, is fully CE certified. This makes it perfect for use not only in prototype scenarios but also in final products.

Based on the principle of “free programming”, Controllino is considered the most versatile industrial-level PLC created to date.

As an open-source platform, the possibilities and options available for programming provide users with the freedom to choose the tool that best suits their projects. For instance: Arduino, Visuino, Atmel Studio, Logicad, Labview, Matlab, GNU Octave, SciLab, among others.

Below, we’ll detail some of the most popular Controllino PLC programming software.

The crowd favorite, Arduino IDE

The Arduino Integrated Development Environment (IDE) is a cross-platform application written in Java. It is used to write and upload programs to Arduino compatible boards and, with the assistance of third-party cores, can also be used with development boards from other providers, such as Controllino.

It is the most widely used IDE for Arduino, facilitating code writing and uploading to Controllino. It runs on Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux, requiring only the installation of Controllino libraries for PC-to-PLC communication to establish.

Not a fan of coding? Visuino is the solution

A visual programming environment that allows programming Arduino boards. It currently supports official Arduino boards, Raspberry Pi, Teensy, Femto IO, ESP8266, ESP32, Controllino, Goldilocks Analogue, FreeSoC2, chipKIT, micro: bit, Maple Mini, and numerous Arduino clones. However, it is not limited to these alone, and requests to support new hardware are welcome.

Some of its advantages include:

  • Hardware components are represented in Visuino, requiring only drag-and-drop functionality.
  • No additional equipment or hardware is needed to run the software in design mode.
  • Once the design is completed, simply connect the Controllino to execute.
  • Programmed through blocks, designed for those who prefer not to write code.

For those who love coding

Atmel Studio is an integrated development environment for Atmel’s AVR and ARM microcontrollers. Its main features include:

  • Atmel Studio (previously known as “AVR Studio” before version 6) is a free IDE for directly programming AVR microcontrollers.
  • It includes an editor, debugger, and tools for direct writing onto microcontrollers.
  • Programming is done in C, C++, or assembly code.
  • It features a project explorer with examples for reference.

One of the most used

LabVIEW is engineering software that simplifies the design of distributed test, measurement, and control systems, reducing development time.

For those who enjoy pure mathematics

Whether for data analysis, algorithm development, or model creation, MATLAB is designed for mathematical thinking and work in the field of numerical analysis. Controllino is also tailored for these seemingly complex environments.

Some other software for programming Controllino PLCs includes:

  • OpenPLC
  • logi.CAD
  • GNU Octave
  • Flowcode
  • Scilab
  • PlatformIO
  • Visual Studio Code + Visual Micro
