What is PoEWhat is PoE?

Power over Ethernet (PoE) is a wired Ethernet local area network (LAN) technology that allows the electrical current required to operate each device to be carried through Ethernet data cables rather than normal electrical power cords and wiring.

Power over Ethernet (PoE) rather than using electrical cables, that only give power and require separate wiring for data, employ less expensive Ethernet cabling that can transmit both power and data. This can happen because it transmits both power and data over an Ethernet cable, less wiring is required, and existing electrical wiring can be preserved.

How does PoE work?

Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) and Powered Devices compensate PoE systems (PD). PSEs deliver a direct current to a normal ethernet cable, which transports it up to 100 meters to a PD.

Industrial system operators are increasingly turning to PoE solutions to reduce the amount of cables required in their infrastructure while yet ensuring dependable power delivery.

What is PoE?

Why Use PoE?

They are plenty of reasons you should consider using PoE for industrial purposes.

  • Time and cost-efficient
    • Reducing the time and expense of having electrical cabling installed. At the same time, network cables do not require an electrician to approve them.

  • Flexibility
    • Digital devices can be set in the desired location. Also, they can be repositioned easily if required.

  • Safety
    • Efficient delivery. It is designed to protect from overload, underpower, or erroneous installation.

  • Reliability
    • Rather than a variety of scattered wall adapters, POE power comes from a single, universally compatible source. It can be powered by an uninterruptible power supply, or it can be remotely operated to disable or reset devices.

  • Scalability
    • Installation and distribution of network connections are straightforward and effective when power is accessible on the network.

What devices use PoE?

Devices that use PoE are the most efficient in most scenarios. The next examples will give you an idea of the different places where it can be installed.

  • Remote Point of Sale (kiosks)
  • VoIP phones
  • IP cameras
  • Wireless and Bluetooth devices are most of the time are compatible. This allows them to operate from different locations.

  • Network routers
  • Sensors, controllers, and meters
  • Many more…

How can PoE be applied for industrial applications?

The use of PoE in industrial applications is every day more common for the efficiency that brings to companies. Below we will demonstrate some examples of how it can be applied.

  • Powered Device (PD)
    •  IP cameras, WLAN access points, VoIP telephones, network routers, industrial systems like sensors, controllers, meters, and more, POS terminals, and splitters are just a few examples. It can also be used to power a variety of other devices.

  • Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE)
    •  The switch or injector can supply additional voltage to the data line. A PoE injector supplies power and voltage to a single Ethernet port, whereas a switch has several ports. It can also be used to replace a standard switch.

  • PoE splitters:
    • It is capable of separating power and voltage from data. This means you can use a PoE splitter powered by an injector or switch to power a device that can’t be powered by ordinarily.
