In this blog, we will illustrate the difference between function and signal generator. The function generator is an instrument that generates different types of waveforms like a sine wave, square wave, triangular wave, a saw-tooth wave. A signal generator is an electronic device (or equipment) that generates repeating or non-repeating electronic signals (in either the analog or digital domains).

Function generator:

The most common signals created by a function generator are the sine wave, square wave, triangular wave, and sawtooth shapes. Waves can be either repetitive or single-shot (which can be an external or internal trigger source).

Different models of function generators:

For a more detailed explanation of the models press HERE.

  • SDG800 Series
    • The SDG800 series function/arbitrary waveform generator family outputs waveform functions up to up to 5 MHz (pulse), 10 MHz (square), 30 MHz (sine).

  • SDG1000X Series
    • SDG1000X is a series of dual-channel function/arbitrary waveform generators with specifications that include up to 60 MHz maximum bandwidth.

  • SDG2000X Series
    • SDG2000X is a series of dual-channel function/arbitrary waveform generators with specifications of up to 120 MHz maximum bandwidth.

  • SSG3000X Series
    • SIGLENT’S SSG3000X series of signal generators have a frequency range of 9 kHz to 2.1 GHz/3.2 GHz.

  • SSG5000X Series
    • SSG5000X series of signal generators can generate analog and vector signals, and have a frequency range of 9 kHz to 4 GHz/6 GHz.

  • SDG6000X Series
    • SDG6000X is a series of dual-channel Pulse/ Arbitrary Waveform Generators that feature up to 500 MHz bandwidth.

Signal generator:

A signal generator is used for test setup, electronic developments, and troubleshooting.RF Generators

Different types of signal generators

  • Audio Frequency (AF) signal generator
    • Electronic test instrument that delivers an accurately calibrated signal at frequencies from the audio to the microwave ranges.

  • Radio Frequency (RF) signal generator
    • Low harmonic content
    • Stable operating frequency
    • Stable output amplitude

Conclusion:

Signal generators only generate a Sine wave, have limited Frequency stability, no capability of phase looking with the external source, and frequency is controlled by frequency range controller. On the other hand, function Generators generates various waveforms like sine, square, sawtooth, triangular. Also,  has high-Frequency Stability, capacity to look into external sources.
