Nowadays, digital technology is at a very advanced level compared to 20 or 30 years ago. There are different brands and manufacturers of digital instrumentation equipment out there that offer very advanced and high level data and signal processing equipment. For example, Digilent Inc, focuses on creating easily accessible, portable and compact test and development equipment that replaces all those very big and chunky devices that have been on the market for years. And by this I am not saying that the old and reliable equipment such as standard oscilloscopes or function generators are bad, we only don’t need such big and rugged equipment when we can have a handheld device that can do everything!

There are devices like Digilent’s Analog Discovery 3 which is a tiny and compact device that offers everything you could need in an electronics lab. It offers the functionality of an oscilloscope, function generator, logic and pattern analyzer, spectrum and network analyzer, protocol analyzer, datalogger, voltmeter and even a programmable power supply up to 5 V!

Portable digital instrumentation and development products are the new way of working in a laboratory, and here we show you the most common applications of these devices.

Most common applications of Portable Digital Instrumentation

Debug, Validation and Test

Portable instrumentation equipment is commonly used for easy and quick validation and maintenance of electronic circuits in industry. With the rapid growth of the digital and electronic world, all machines and systems work with all types of signals, both digital and analog, to operate.

With portable measurement equipment we can have all the necessary instruments at hand whenever and wherever you want, to make signal validation and quick and effective repairs on electronic circuits, so there is no need to spend all the time in the lab.

Digilent’s multi-instrument Analog Discovery 3 features a wide range of measurement and analysis functions at a high speed up to 125 MS/s.

Digilent even provides easily accessible libraries for use in development software such as Labview and Matlab, as well as SDKs for Python, C, C++ and more languages.

Remote Labs

As students, we don’t have all the access at all hours to the lab equipment at our institution, or we want to keep testing from home or in some cafeteria with electronic circuits for our projects. With portable digital instrumentation devices we can carry all the necessary equipment to perform our tests.

Digilent’s devices have a USB C interface for connection to any laptop or notebook PC. It includes Waveforms software, where you can visualize all the instruments and tools available for your Analog and Digital series devices.

Teaching and Training

Digilent’s instrumentation kits are designed to be as easy and complex to use as we need them to be. Digilent devices offer a simple interface and programming with a wide variety of tutorials and accessory kits for students to be able to learn the basics of electronics.

Both Digilent’s FPGA boards and digital measurement instruments offer all the tools and features to make basic electronic test circuits for children and teenagers to learn about the digital world.

For electronics lovers, Digilent offers a wide range of kits to make all kinds of designs and circuits. The FPGA series offers a wide range of PMod accessories with which we can integrate different sensors, buttons, switches, leds, lights, speakers, keyboards, and many more accessories!
