The purpose of this blog is to illustrate what does it mean to open-source, what can an industrial plc with open source means, and our recommendation for an industrial plc that works around open-source nature and more.

What is open source?

Open-source software (OSS) means that you are able to modify, improve or utilize software at your own will without any redemptions/restrictions. Thus, you can tailor the software for your own applications.

The programs of our PC, cellphones, tablet, or any digital device that we use on a daily basis are software formed by a base code. This base code can be of two types, open-source or closed, in other words, it can be modified by anyone (open-source) or be private (closed).

Examples of open-source software:

  • GNU/Linux
  • Mozilla Firefox
  • VLC media player
  • SugarCRM
  • GIMP
  • VNC
  • Apache webserver
  • LibreOffice
  • jQuery

Controllino is a powerful industrial plc that is 100% compatible with Arduino, and also has open-source software.  Controllino believes that everyone should have an opportunity to stand up against traditional, proprietary PLC companies. Thus, their industrial PLC does not have vendor lock-ins, fixed cycle times, or any other limitations. View controllino clicking here.

Benefits of an industrial plc with an open-source:

Having an open-source plc can be used in many different ways to our advantage. Below we will cover the ones we consider the most relevant facts.

  1. Free remix and redistribution.

  2. A higher degree of cooperation.

  3. Access to the source.

  4. End to predatory vendor lock-in.

Myths about open source:

Below we will talk about the myths that still exist when we discuss open-source software.

  • Loose control

The myth is that by having an open-source industrial plc you lose control over it. For example, as the owners of a controllino industrial plc we choose and verify the extensions that are added to our open-source software.

  • Opens=unsafe

Not true, in open-source software many people cooperate to make the software better, work to get even safer, and keep unauthorized people out.

  • Everything is free

The source is free and publicly available but the industrial plc for example still needs the accessories, maintenance, and is dependent on other things that may cost.

How did open source was created?

In 1985 Richard Stallman founded the Free Software Foundation (FSF), their objective was to impulse the use of open-source software. Stallman’s idea of open software comes with the idea that everyone should have a chance to modify, improve or change software based on our needs and applications.
